Obituary

Frederick Hayes Mercer, II passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at his home in Taylors.
Born January 14, 1946 in Ridgeland, SC, Fred is survived by his wife of 49 years, Barbara L. Mercer, and by their son, Hayes Mercer. Fred was predeceased by his mother, Lillian Woods Mercer and his grandparents, Frank and Nora Woods.
Fred attended the University of South Carolina. After college, he lived in Savannah until he moved to Greenville in 1983. Fred was a proud member of Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day Committee and returned to Savannah annually to celebrate the holiday. Fred was an avid, and lifetime, Gamecock fan, serving in various positions in Greenville’s Gamecock Club. He had a love for high school football and officiated high school football games throughout the state for over 40 years. Fred loved the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. In recent years, he spent as much time as possible at his “river house” near Bluffton. Fred enjoyed golfing and was a longtime member of Pebble Creek Country Club.
Fred was the founder and owner of B-F Material Handling, a leader in material handling, storage, and logistics for over 40 years.
Visitation will be held Sunday, February 25, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at Sauls Funeral Home, 310 Adams St., Ridgeland, SC. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Ridgeland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Fred’s name to Homestead Hospice, 109 Laurens Rd., Bldg. 1A, Greenville, SC 29607, or to the charity of one’s choice.
