William Robert Bauer



William R. Bauer, 85, of Bluffton, S.C., formerly of Gaithersburg, Md., passed away at home on Monday, August 7, 2017. He was born in Camden, N.J., son of the late Andrew Bauer and Mabel Mueller. Bauer held a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively. Over his 36-year career with RCA and IBM, he supported many significant government technology projects, including the Apollo manned space flight and Navstar/Global Positioning System programs.

While living in Maryland, Bauer and his extended family vacationed often in the Hilton Head area, and in 2003 Bauer and his wife Rita permanently relocated to Sun City, where they enjoyed golf, bocce, bicycling and other community amenities, as well as traveling and cruising. He also enjoyed horse racing, piano, fine cigars and a good Grey Goose vodka martini.

In addition to his parents, Bauer was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Flynn Bauer, and his brother, Andrew Bauer. He is survived by his wife, Rita; a sister, Barbara Marsh and her husband, Joel, of St. Thomas U.S.V.I.; four daughters: Mary Jane Frahm and her husband, Steven, of Potomac, Md., Judith Gan and her husband, Ronald, of Bethany Beach, Del., Joanne Morris and her husband, Scott, of Fairfax Station, Va., and Janet Wolfe and her husband, Patrick, of Wayne, Pa.; a step-daughter, Gerianne Kenny, of Annapolis, Md.; nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Rd., Bluffton S.C. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
