Luciana “Lu” de Cassia Gualberto da Silva Candido Alves Van Voris, age 45, of Bluffton, SC and formerly of south Florida died Sunday, July 23, 2017 in Atlanta, GA.

Lu was born on November 26, 1971 in Recife, Brazil. She was a graduate of the University of Pernambuco where she earned a degree in physical education. Following her formal education, she worked as a flight attendant with TAM Airlines and later worked with the American Embassy in Miami. Before moving to South Carolina, she worked in video production and was the Executive Assistant to the Director of the School of Entertainment and Design Technology of Miami Dade College. She had recently started her business, Silver by Lu, offering fine sterling silver jewelry. Lu was fluent in Portuguese, English, Spanish, Italian, and Mandarin.

Lu was preceded in death by her father, Nerício Gualberto da Silva and her sister, Luann Gualberto. She is survived by her daughter, Giovanna Sophia Van Voris; mother, Terezinha Cȃndido Alves; companion, Brad Ferrell; and brothers, Leonardo da Vinci Gualberto da Silva and Nerício Gualberto da Silva Júnior.

Lu was a compassionate, loving woman who would light up a room with her smile.

Lu lived her life for her daughter and her daughter lives her life for Lu. They had the strongest mother/daughter bond we have ever seen. Here is a copy of a letter that 12-year-old Gigi wrote to her mother Lu this past March:

Lu, the survivor
Lu, the strong
Lu, the independent
Lu, the intelligent
Lu, the wise
Lu, the confident

Lu, the beautiful
Lu, the tall
Lu, the elegant
Lu, the gem

Lu, the kind,
Lu, the hilarious
Lu, the special.

Lu, the person who fits her name’s meaning and the meaning is the light at the end of many’s tunnel.

Lu, the person I would not know where I would be without.

Lu, teacher
Lu, my best friend
Lu, the person I am proud to call my mother.
