Earl Frederick Wheeler, 83, was called to his heavenly home on January 28, 2017, after a valiant battle with cancer. His firm belief in God as his Lord and Savior gave him ultimate peace.
Earl was born to the late Raymond and Gladys Wheeler in Albany, New York on September 6, 1933. At an early age Earl gave his life to Jesus Christ, who was his lifelong support and guide. Over the course of his life, he served as a Youth Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and as a Gideon. He was also affiliated with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, NCCAA, and was a Board Member of Charleston Southern University.
Earl was blessed with a loving family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years, Joan (VanBumble) Wheeler; his son David E. Wheeler of Poughkeepsie, New York; son Dr. Daniel F. Wheeler and his wife Carol of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; daughter Linda (Wheeler) Fick and husband Timothy of Bluffton, South Carolina; 9 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a sister Ramona (Wheeler) Struthers of San Jose, California; and brothers Gary P. Wheeler of Campbell, California, and Richard Wheeler of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Earl graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York in 1955. He then began his career at I.B.M. He was called into service of the U.S. Air Force where he served for 2 years in Mobile, Alabama leaving the service a Captain. He returned to I.B.M. where he worked until his retirement in 1993, retiring as Senior Vice President and General Manager.
Upon his retirement, Earl moved to The Low-Country where he lived for 23 years until his passing. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hilton Head Island where he taught the Walk With the King Sunday School Class, was a Deacon and Deacon Emeritus, and served on numerous committees and boards.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Hilton Head Island.

Celebrating the life of Earl Frederick Wheeler
Thank you for signing Earl Frederick Wheeler's Guestbook
Earl was a pioneer in software, in supporting women in management, in setting a Christian example in the corporate world. He continues to be a role model and inspiration to me for over 35 years, even though I have not seen him in 20. He was a genius, a gentleman, a visionary, a mentor, and inspirational leader. He was respected, in some ways feared, and the model of integrity. He was not afraid to practice his Christianity in his work through his decisions and actions, but never imposed his beliefs on others. I am thankful for having the experience of Earl and a few others like him during my career. He did more for me personally than anyone will ever know, and I was just one of many. The world needs more people the quality of Earl. I thank God for his life and all he did for me. Dorene Hisey Palermo

My deepest condolences to the Wheeler family. May the beautiful inspired passage found at Revelation 21:3,4 bring comfort during this very painful time. Again, so sorry for your loss.
