​Reiko Umezu Dickerson



Reiko Umezu Dickerson, 88, of Bluffton, SC passed away peacefully Saturday, October 21, 2017 surrounded by her loved ones.

Mrs. Dickerson was born in 1928 in Fukuoka, Japan to the late Masatoshi and Yuki Umezu. She met her husband, the late Rudolph Dickerson, a US Navy and Air Force Veteran, while he was serving in Japan. They married in 1951 and raised their family in New Jersey. Mrs. Dickerson became a US citizen in 1969 and lived most of her life in Monmouth County, New Jersey before she moved to Bluffton in 2013.

Mrs. Dickerson was a loving wife, devoted mother, and fun grandmother who brightened the lives of everyone around her. Her kind heart and warm sense of humor prevailed even as she approached the end of her life. She relished in spending time with her family and her many friends. Mrs. Dickerson was an excellent cook and part owner of Yoshi Restaurant in Colts Neck, NJ. She also had a natural skill for gardening and grew the best tomatoes. In her youth she was a talented tennis player, and in adulthood Mrs. Dickerson became an ardent football fan, affectionately nicknamed “Coach.”

Mrs. Dickerson is survived by her children, June and her husband Ed, Richard and his wife Wendy, Diane and her husband Joe, and Robert and his wife Margaret; grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband Brian, Alexander, Megan, Courtney, Caitlin, and Shane; great-grandchildren Kylee and Cassidy; as well as numerous family members in Japan including brothers, Tadahiro, Masaji, and Hiroshi.

In addition to her husband of 43 years, Mrs. Dickerson was preceded in death by her brother, Masaaki; sisters, Hisako, Akiko, and Asako; and partner of 11 years, Ed Hutnik.
