Obituary

Fred G. Matheson, 81 of Hilton Head, SC passed away suddenly at his home on July 29, 2017. He was born in Ridgway, PA on November 24, 1935 to the late Sherwood and Ethel Matheson. Fred was devoted to his family and is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth / BJ (Josephson) Matheson of St. Mary's, PA, daughter Lisa Oscarson (husband: Randall) of Hudson, OH, son Doug Matheson (wife: Carol) of Atlanta, GA and daughter Kathleen Whitmer (husband: Scott) of Richmond, VA, his beloved grandchildren Matthew Oscarson, Adam Oscarson, Andrew Oscarson, Kendall Matheson, Kate Matheson, Carson Matheson, Robert Thomas Whitmer, Meredith Whitmer and Nicholas Whitmer.

Fred was a dedicated and loyal brother to Carol Ferraro (Tony), Gary Matheson (Sue), Donna Matheson and Wayne Matheson (Barbara). He graduated from Ridgway High School in 1955, played football for Clarion University while earning his degree in 1959. After graduation, Fred joined the Army Reserves and upon completion of basic training and serving for 6 months, Fred began teaching at Saint Boniface Catholic School (Kersey, PA) in 1960. He then began a 38 year career in Industrial Sales with Brockway Pressed Metals which took him to Lexington, KY in 1961, before settling down to raise his family in Carmel, IN from 1964 to 2003. Several years after assembling a small group of investors to purchase Brockway Pressed Metals, the company was sold to Inland Steel in 2003 which led to his retirement in Hilton Head, SC.

Fred was very active coaching youth sports, the Kiwanis, Jaycees & King of Glory Lutheran Church in Carmel. Once retired, volunteering continued to be a very important part of his life as a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church, volunteering at Second Helpings, Habitat for Humanity, along with a wide variety of Moss Creek Community Clubs. A celebration of Fred’s life along with a funeral service will be held on August 11, 2017 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ridgway, PA. Friends and family will be received at 10am and the service will begin at 11am. A memorial reception is also being planned and will be held in Hilton Head, SC in the near future.
